Johnson & Johnson acquired McNeil Laboratories in 1959. To expand its reach beyond consumer and medical supplies, the company began acquiring pharmaceutical firms, including McNeil. McNeil began as a family-run pharmacy in 1879 and later expanded to include drug production. At the heart of its business was TYLENOL®, the first aspirin-free pain reliever. Today, TYLENOL® remains a household name and one of Johnson & Johnson’s most popular products.
